
Shortwave, Medium-wave, or Twin-tube? Picking the right IR for your metal curing
If you’re setting up a powder finishing line, you’ve probably realized that not all IR lamps are created equal. You can’t just swap one for another and expect the same result. It all comes down to how the wavelength hits the metal, which ends up deciding how much you’re spending on electricity and how fast your parts move through the shop. Shortwave IR: The Speed Demon Shortwave is all about raw intensity. It hits the surface hard and fast. If you’re in a rush to get your parts up to curing temperature, this is your go-to. The heat just punches right through the powder layer. It’s fast. Really fast. But there’s a catch. Because these lamps run so hot, they burn out quicker than the medium-wave stuff. You also have to make sure your cooling system is actually up to the task. If it isn’t, you’re going to see your housing start to warp, and that’s a headache nobody wants. Medium-wave IR: The Steady Hand Then you have medium-wave. These are the reliable workhorses. They don’t have that aggressive “flash” of the shortwave, but they’re great for thicker coatings or parts that need to soak in the heat for a while. The best part? You don’t get those annoying “hot spots.” The heat spreads out evenly across the metal, so you get a consistent finish without the guesswork. Plus, they generally last longer. Twin-tube: Power in a Tight Spot Now, sometimes you’re stuck with a tiny oven but you’ve got a massive mountain of parts to move. That’s where twin-tubes come in. Basically, we cram two filaments into one quartz envelope. You get double the radiating surface in the same amount of space, which means way more heat flux. Just a heads-up: keep an eye on your wiring. These draw a lot of current. Use heavy-duty connectors, or you’ll end up melting your terminals, which is a great way to ruin a Tuesday. So, it’s a simple trade-off. Go with shortwave if you need speed. Stick with medium-wave if you want a uniform, steady cure. And if you’re cramped for space but need raw power, twin-tubes are the way to go.
