Getting the Most Out of Infrared Halogen Lamps for Water Systems
When we build halogen infrared lamps, the goal is simple: move heat fast. Most heaters waste time warming up the air around them first. Not these. They use shortwave radiation to shoot energy straight into the water. It’s an immediate transfer. To make sure these things don’t just burn out the moment they hit high thermal stress, we spend a lot of time obsessing over the tungsten filament and the quartz envelope. The nitty-gritty on power We usually pack a lot of wattage into a very short lamp. It keeps the whole setup compact. By using a high-voltage setup, we can push a ton of power through that filament without needing a giant tube. But here’s the thing: your power supply has to be spot on. If your voltage starts jumping around, you’re going to pop a filament. To avoid that headache, we always suggest a stable PID controller to keep the duty cycle under control. Glass and plugs The quartz glass is really the heart of the whole thing. We use high-purity quartz because it can take the shock of a white-hot filament sitting right next to a cold environment without shattering. For the plugs, we stick with R7s or Sk15 connectors. Why? Because when a lamp finally hits its end-of-life, you want to be able to swap it out in seconds, not hours. Plus, some of our lamps have a special coating. It shifts the infrared spectrum, which basically helps the heat soak deeper into the water instead of just hitting the surface. The trade-offs The best part is the speed. There is zero lag. You flip a switch, and you have heat. But there’s a catch. That quartz tube is fragile.Really fragile. You can’t let the glass touch the water or any part of the metal housing. If it touches, you get a hot spot, and the glass will crack. It’s as simple as that. We always recommend using a precise mounting bracket to keep the lamp centered and floating safely in its own space.
