
Shortwave vs. Mediumwave: Which IR Lamp Actually Works for Your Fabric?
I see it all the time. An engineer spends weeks spec-ing out a system, only to realize the lamps they picked are either scorching the surface of the fabric or just wasting a ton of electricity. It usually comes down to one thing: wavelength.
Getting the heat where it needs to go
Think of it like this. Shortwave (SW) lamps run hot. Really hot. Because of that, the energy they put out can punch deep into the material. If you’re dealing with thick, heavy fabrics or those tricky synthetic blends, SW is your best bet to get the core dry without waiting forever. But if you’re working with standard cotton or water-based coatings, mediumwave (MW) is usually the way to go. Its energy just “clicks” better with water and organic fibers. It transfers the heat more directly, which makes the whole process feel a lot more efficient.
The grit and the gear
We use high-purity quartz for both, mostly because the thermal shock is brutal. Since SW lamps run at such high temperatures, the quartz tubes really take a beating every time you cycle them on and off. One quick tip: don’t skimp on your reflectors. Use polished aluminum. If you don’t bounce that energy back toward the fabric, you’re basically heating up your machine frame. It’s a waste of about 30% of your heat.
Speed vs. Safety
If you need to shrink your oven footprint or crank up your line speed, SW lamps are a powerhouse. They pack a massive punch. But there’s a catch. If the gap between the lamp and your fabric is too tight, that high-intensity radiation will fry the surface before the inside is even warm. MW lamps are a bit more relaxed. They’re slower, sure, but they give you a gentle, controlled heat that’s much safer for thin, delicate textiles.
A couple of things to watch for
Before you start wiring everything up, take a look at your power supply. These high-wattage tubes hate unstable voltage. If the power flickers, your lamps might burn out way sooner than they should. And if you’re thinking about swapping an old mediumwave setup for shortwave to speed things up? Double-check your cooling fans. The heat around the lamp housing is going to jump significantly, and you don’t want to melt your own equipment.
